Brief Bio

Dave and Jennifer Sutherland live in the People's Republic of Boulder, Colorado. Our daughter, Ana, was born in Ecuador in 1993 and we adopted her in 1994.

Dave and Jen met in the Peace Corps in Honduras back in 1984, and got married in a beautiful meadow in Montana in 1987. We worked in the Galápagos Islands as environmental educators from 1991 - 1994, when we adopted Ana.

Dave graduated from University High School (or UHigh) in Normal, Illinois in 1980 and Pomona College in Claremont, CA in 1994 (biology major), Master's from U of Idaho in 1991 (Latin American Conservation emphasis). Yes, there really IS a town called Normal Illinois, and you can probably guess why Dave doesn't live there anymore.

Jen was an Air Force brat, and grew up at a number of bases in California before moving to Montana as a teen. She graduated from Great Falls High School in Montana (1979) and Montana State University (Spanish). She is #3 in a family of 7 kids, and we'll just not go into some of the mischief she got into with her brothers. She was never arrested, anyway.

Dave has worked as a park naturalist for the city of Boulder's Open Space & Mountain Parks program since 1996. He is proud to be a science and natural history geek, and this is the perfect job for him: gets to be the center of attention, gets to show off, gets paid to be outdoors learning about plants and animals.

Jen taught Spanish for Boulder School District until she suffered a stroke in July, 2005. She has since retired from teaching and does volunteer work with Spanish-speaking elementary kids. Stroke recovery is a challenge, but Jen has been able to put her life back together.
